What is Sabbath to you? Does it mean the day you don’ t go to work? Does it mean going to church on Sunday and giving that morning to Him?
These are all good ideas, but one thing I would like to add, is the idea of rest. One misconception that some of us may have is that when we rest, it means to do nothing. No, the idea of resting calls us to rest in the Lord’s presence.
When God created the world in six days, and rested on the seventh, do you think He did nothing? Think of it like this: when parents hold their baby for the first time after a long period of preparation, they’re filled with delight, love, and awe. Don’t you think that God did the same? The Israelites (in the book of Leviticus), before entering the promised land, were told to work for six years and to rest the seventh; this not only called for a level of trust, but also a level of humility.
Rest not only reminded them of God’s providence, but also allowed the land to be regenerated/restored. In this period of “rest,” like the Israelites, let us be reminded of God’s providence in our lives, and whatever we do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through him (Colossians 3:17).
What does it look like for you to rest this week?
